APPLICATION OF IoB IN THE HEALTH SECTOR
1. IoB in the Health Insurance Industry
In the insurance industry, IoB may be quite beneficial. Driver tracking tools are already used by insurance companies like Britam and others to track and secure a driver’s conduct. With the help of IoB, they may evaluate the behavior and perhaps determine if a certain occurrence was an accident or a misjudged assumption on the part of the insured. This can help prevent driving under the influence of drugs, and even underage persons from getting behind the wheel and causing an accidents which endangers human life and well being. It influences the behavior of the drivers by making them value their well being and that of their passengers.
Health insurance companies may use IoB to track physical activities to reduce premiums for example they could use it to monitor grocery and supermarket purchases; too many unhealthy items could increase premiums. Therefore, they can influence their customers behavior in a way that reduces health risks and hence reduce premiums for the company (save funds).
2. IoB Health applications/software
For example, software company BMC in the USA has developed a health app for smartphones that tracks diet, sleep patterns, heart rate, blood sugar levels, stress levels and oxygen levels. The app can alert to adverse situations in the user’s health and suggest behavioral modifications towards a more positive outcome.
3. IoB in Enhancing Health Services delivery
In the medical field, health care providers can use IoB to assess patient’s condition, their commitment to treatments and obtain more accurate data on their lifestyle. This would enable them to give better and informed advice to their patients.
Smart devices or apps can be used as health consultants that don’t necessarily replace doctors but can reveal specific health issues. For example, fitness trackers or smart apparel can be used by athletes to measure heart rate, daily step count, and calories. In case of any unsafe health conditions, the device can alert the user.
4. IoB in Marketing of health Products and Services
IoB can help companies or institutions in the health sector to tailor their products and services to the consumers. It can be used to supplement or even replace the multiple health surveys being carried out.
It can also be used to study unattainable data on how customers and users interact with health services and products and interpret their feedback.
It can also be used to provide real-time notifications about suitable and certified health outlets such as nearby hospitals and services offered, chemists and other health related outlets such as gyms, counselling and rehabilitation centers.
5. IoB in Handling the Covid-19 Pandemic
The epidemic has increased our awareness of the precautions we must take during this period.
Employers might use sensors or RFID (Radar Frequency IDentification )tags to see if there are any inconsistencies in following safety standards. Further, computer vision can be used to determine if employees are complying with mask protocol or social distancing directives and loud speakers were used to warn people violating the health protocols.
Governments and Healthcare providers can also utilize smart devices e.g. smart cameras to monitor people’s activities and locations to ensure they minimize their chances of contracting the virus by following social restrictions thus IoB can be used for overall public welfare and enforcing Covid-19 protocols.
Restaurants and food delivery applications, utilize the protocol information to guide their decisions. They can also record and broadcast the temperature of the delivery person to reassure consumers that they were safe.
Covid-19 Health Passport (with apps such as Aarogya Setu in India, and The Health Code in China) and Social Distancing Technologies are partners in this emerging IoB health technology.
6. Measuring the engagement efforts and satisfaction levels of patients
Healthcare providers can use IoB to test effectiveness of drugs or healthcare campaigns which could supplement or even replace the regular surveys being carried out.
